Integrated Optical Imaging of the Environment on Underwater Autonomous Vehicles
Areté, a leading-edge technology company with over four decades of experience developing systems for the Navy, is partnering with Princeton University to develop the Autonomous Quantitative Imaging System (AQuIS), delivering new, long-endurance, underwater imaging capabilities. AQuIS monitors objects from millimeters to a meter, providing information on fluid and particle velocities and object detection and characterization. Its energy‑efficient design, autonomous processing, and real‑time data products delivered over low‑bandwidth satellite telemetry bring advanced laboratory techniques to the field. AQuIS is optimized for long, unattended deployments using dedicated hardware for imaging and processing, leveraging modern GPUs to reduce processing time. AQuIS enhances the Navy’s and researchers’ capabilities in fundamental and applied research by providing new, long‑term measurements and near real‑time data to better understand the ocean environment.
Arete’s AQuIS is an underwater imaging system used to detect, characterize, and track particles like marine snow and bubbles and extract metrics like fluid velocities, turbulence, and particle size and concentration.
